Introduction:
With the editing phase approaching I have been looking through different experimental films of the past as well as images looking for inspiration on how I can combine footage into a cohesive film. I have been using Vimeo and YouTube as the main viewing platform for experimental films and I have been using Pinterest mainly.
Double Exposure:
I plan on using double exposure which is a technique developed by Maya Darren which we see throughout a number of her films such as Meshes of the Afternoon (1943). My plan is to use the compositions I planned out and achieve during the production phase and a combination of very long and slow crossfades to briefly combine the images and then have them fade out again. With this you can achieve quite an early look that symbolises the passing of the time which a key theme within my film showcasing the change in art over the years.
These are just a few images I have been using as inspiration, the top one most notably.
colour grading:
When it comes to the Colour grading of the film I plan on using my signature style which I have been starting use more and more. The use of very bright lights and nd filters is for this purpose. I like my subject to be strongly lit allowing me to lower my exposure using nd filters to make practical lighting appear less bright.
When it comes the colour grade itself I like to keep a very dark colour palette and increasing the blacks and contrast which I can achieve with my 10-bit video codec on my camera. I try to film everything in as flat of a colour profile as I can as to give me more flexibility and creativity when comes to colour grading to achieve the look I wish to have.
Titles:
The Opening Title is something I plan on including to reveal the film to the audience in a subtle way while also being able to credit myself as this project I intent to use as a portfolio piece even after my studies at university.
For the Title I aim to use a font that looks quite old almost giving a 1940's asylum type of feeling as you read it with the sound design in the background immersing the viewer into the eerie emotion I am trying create.
